A missile was dropped during unloading on submarine base in Kamchatka

According to the press service of the government of Kamchatka region a rocket fuel spill happened on the pier of a military facility Vilyuchinsk (nuclear submarines base of the Pacific Fleet) in Kamchatka at August 20.

“On Thursday evening [local time] when unloading a missile from a sea transport standing in the Kolan bay area of Vilyuchinsk facility, there was an emergency situation resulted in spilled fuel components,” – said the Acting Deputy Prime Minister of the Kamchatka Territory and Minister of Special Programmes Sergei Khabarov.

Khabarov stressed that there is no threat to life or health of Vilyuchinsk residents due to the emergency situation that occurred at a military facility. “There is no reason for concerns among the population: there is no threat of radiation contamination,” – he said.

The spill is being removed by military forces of the north-east of Russia. Troops of Ministry of Emergency Situations are “in stand-by mode”, and will be involved if needed.

The photos from social networks show an orange cloud and fire fighting vessels making a water barrier. According to these reports, the rocket was dropped on the pier while loading.
