The State Department noted a record number of “green card” applications from Russian citizens

The number of Russians trying to emigrate to the United States has never been greater: this year more than 265,000 Russians have applied for a green card, although the quota has not exceeded 4,000, says Bloomberg referring to the US State Department.

“When sociologists ask Russians whether they like the United States, the answer is a resounding “no”. (…) However, the number of Russians who are trying to emigrate to the United States, has never been greater,”- says the article at Bloomberg under the heading “If the Russians hate the United States so much, why do they want to move there?”.

Bloomberg cites a poll of “Levada Center” that was published this week, according to which 71% of Russians believe that the United States plays a negative role in the world. The agency reminds that the number of people in Russia holding that opinion was only 50% two years ago.

According to the State Department, referred by Bloomberg, in 2014 almost 246,000 Russians got a visa for temporary work and education in the United States. It is noted that 10 years ago this number was two times less. At the same time, the newspaper notes that Russia’s population (numbering 143 million people) has not increased since then.

In addition, the newspaper notes that 3622 more Russians have received permission for permanent residence in the United States in 2014. That includes 56 Russians who agreed to invest at least $500,000 in the US economy.

Bloomberg notes that besides the US, the other popular destination for Russians’ relocation is Europe. However, the numbers are still much less comparing to the peak rate of emigration, which were observed in 90’s, notes the newspaper.
