For Russia it is not essential preserving Assad in power in Syria

This was stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Maria Zakharova live on the radio “Ekho Moskvy” (The Echo of Moscow – RRT).

“Absolutely not, we never said that,” – she said answering the question whether it is essential for Russia to preserve Assad’s power.

According to her, “the fate of the country’s president should be decided by Syrian people”.

Thus, Zakharova added that Moscow “does not say whether Assad should leave or stay”.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov after a meeting in Vienna also said that the decision on the fate of Assad should be made by “Syrians themselves in the context of a political process”.
