Obama demanded Russia to make a choice “between Assad and Syria”

US President Barack Obama believes that Russia should decide on what they chooses: to continue supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad, or “the salvation of the Syrian state”. As noted by Associated Press, Obama believes that saving the Syrian state is only possible through forming a government that is legitimate.

On Thursday, the US president held talks at the APEC summit with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and said that he has no idea how to end the civil war in Syria while Assad is in power.

Obama believes that Assad will not be able to legitimize his power in the country.

In Obama’s opinion, all the diplomatic steps are being taken to change the politic system of Syria, and ensure the transfer of power.

November 18 Obama stated that Russia “has been a constructive partner in Vienna on the issue of political transition” in Syria. However, he reiterated that the US and Russia still don’t agree on the figure of Assad.

Russia continues to insist that the displacement of the current president of Syria can not be linked to a cease-fire in the country where there is a war against terrorists of “Islamic state”. Russian officials insist that the future course of the country and the leadership of the state should be chosen by Syrian citizens.

On Wednesday it was also reiterated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. According to him, he noticed a change in the position of the West in the fight against ISIS terrorists, and linking it with the fate of Bashar al-Assad.

Lavrov also denied the statement of Turkey that at a recent meeting in Vienna on Syria it was agreed that Assad will not participate in the political process in Syria. Turkey proposed such ideas, but they did not receive consensus support.
