Israel told about the violation of its airspace by a Russian aircraft

Russian Air Force aircraft involved in operations in Syria recently invaded the Israeli airspace. It was reported by the head of the Defense Ministry of the country Moshe Ya’alon.

“There was recorded a slight (just about one mile) penetration by a Russian airplane from Syria into our airspace – said Ya’alon. – But the incident was immediately solved, and the Russian plane headed back to Syria.”

Defense Minister suggested that the incident could have been caused by a pilot mistake – he was flying over the Golan Heights, that is considered the territory of Syria by a significant part of the international community.

Moshe Ya’alon also said that regarding such incidents there is a number of agreements between Russia and Israel, including an information hotline.

“[We know] Russian planes are not going to attack us, so we do not need to automatically shoot down every plane”.

  • November 24 Turkish Air Force shot down a Russian Su-24 over Syria. The pilot was killed, the navigator managed to escape.
  • Turkish authorities announced that the plane entered the country’s airspace for a few seconds, and did not respond to warnings. Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the crew of the Su-24 did not cross the air borders of Turkey and did not receive any warnings.
  • The incident has complicated relations between Russia and Turkey, effectively putting the two countries to the edge of conflict. November 28, Russia announced a set of sanctions against Turkey, including introducing of entrance visas, and a ban on the import of a number of Turkish products.
  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed regret over the incident, but refused to apologize for the downed aircraft.
