Saudi Arabia broke diplomatic relations with Iran. This was reported by Reuters referring to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia Adel al-Jubeir.

According to the agency, the foreign minister announced this at a press conference. According to al-Jubeir, Iran’s diplomatic mission was given 48 hours to leave the country. The Minister said that Riyadh will not allow Iran to undermine the security of his country.

The day before the Interior Ministry of Saudi Arabia announced the execution of 47 people convicted of involvement in terrorism. Among the executed there was one of the most prominent representatives of the country’s Shiite minority, sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, who was arrested in 2012 on charges of inciting the riots.

The execution of a preacher has caused outrage in the Shiite world, including Iran. Thus, the country’s supreme leader Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that the rulers of Saudi Arabia will be overtaken by retribution for the execution of a preacher.

“The unjust shedding of the blood of a martyr will undoubtedly have an effect, and in the near future divine retribution will overtake Saudi politicians”, – he said.

Yesterday, the Iranian parliament urged the Foreign Ministry to reduce the level of diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia. Foreign Ministry sent an official protest over the actions of Riyadh. In turn, the Saudi Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador because of Iran’s reaction to the execution of Nimr al-Nimr. He was handed over a note of protest, and told that Saudis consider the Iranian reaction to the decision of the Saudi judicial authorities “aggressive” behavior, and Tehran’s behavior is taken as “gross interference” in the internal affairs of the country. The diplomat was also requested to make sure of the safety of the Saudi Embassy in Tehran.

Nevertheless, on the night of December 3 Iranian protesters attacked the Saudi diplomatic mission. They set fire to the building, and smashed the interior of the embassy. After the attack about 40 people were detained by the police. Saudi diplomats were evacuated from Iran. According to Al-Arabiya, the embassy staff is already in Dubai.
