UN General Assembly recognized referendum in Crimea illegal

United Nations has recognized the annexation of Crimea an illegal act, reported on the organization’s website.

100 countries voted for the corresponding resolution, while Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, North Korea, Syria, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Venezuela and Nicaragua voted against. Among the 58 countries that decided to abstain – Brazil, South Africa, China, India, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Algeria, Vietnam, Egypt and Uzbekistan. Israel, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Serbia refused to vote at all.

In the resolution there is a reference to the statute of the organization about the territorial integrity of UN member countries, as well as a reminder of the obligations of the parties, undertaken in the framework of a number of agreements, including the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, which guaranteed the security of Ukraine after its accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear weapons.

However, it is worth noting that the 2-page document does not contain any mention of Russia in the text of the decision of the General Assembly, there is only a call not to recognize the change of the borders of Ukraine.

It is also worth noting that the resolution of the UN General Assembly can not be vetoed. At the same time, it is not a law.
