Stadium being built for World Cup 2018 collapsed in Volgograd

One of the structures collapsed at the construction site of the stadium Volgograd-Arena that is being built for the World Cup 2018. As a result of the accident no one was hurt. A commission will look into the incident. According to preliminary data, the root cause might be so-called “fatigue” of the metal.

“A working commission will deal with the incident. Most likely it happened because of the so-called “fatigue” of the metal. It is also possible that a technological mistake was made during masonry work,” – the director of civil engineering of the company Stroytransgaz Valery Nelyubov said to TASS.

This is the third emergency situation during the construction of Volgograd-Arena. On November 7 last year, two workers were hospitalized as a result of the fall of the reinforcing cage. One of the victims was seriously injured. Investigative Committee opened a criminal case against the chief of a site from the organization that participated in the construction of the arena, on the article of the Criminal Code “Violation of safety rules during construction”.

On February 13, 2016, a 21-year-old employee of a subcontractor was hospitalized in one of Volgograd hospitals with pelvis fracture.

Volgograd-Arena is being built instead of the dismantled Central Stadium between the Mamayev Hill and the right bank of the Volga. The customer of the construction is the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Sport-In”, the general contractor – “Stroytransgaz”. The contract amount is 16.2 billion rubles (approx. $245 million – RRT), the due date – November 2017.
