Kerry said USA had the right to shoot in the incident in Baltic Sea

US Secretary of State John Kerry condemned the incident with the flight of Russian Su-24 near the American warship “Donald Cook” in the Baltic Sea, describing it as “provocative and dangerous” clash of combat forces, reports Reuters.

“We condemn this kind of behavior. It is foolhardy. It is provocative. It is dangerous. And in accordance with the rules of warfare, we could shoot to kill,” – Kerry said.

“People need to understand that this is a serious matter, and the United States are not going to give in to the intimidation in the open sea,” – he stressed.

“We talk with the Russians, pointing out how dangerous it is. And we hope that it will never happen again,” – Kerry said.

On April 13, the US European Command issued a video and photos related to the incident that took place in the Baltic Sea, on April 11 and 12, when Russian planes and helicopters approached the US Navy ship. The US side expressed its concern, calling the behavior of the Russian aviation “unprofessional and unsafe”.

On April 14, the Russian Defense Ministry rejected the interpretation of the White House, according to which Russian planes violated the rules for the use of international air space. “The principle of freedom of navigation of the destroyer of the US Navy does not negate the principle of the freedom of Russian aircrafts’ flights,” – stated in the military.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov also noted that Russian pilots flew the lapel of US ship in compliance with all security measures.

On Thursday, April 14, the spokesman of the State Department John Kirby informed that Kerry plans to discuss the incident in the Baltic Sea with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
