NATO fighter jets arrived to Finland for military exercises

US Air Force jet fighters will perform training flights with fighter aircrafts of the Air Force of Finland, which is not a NATO member.

This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine with reference to the Finnish media Yle.

American pilots will take part in the Finnish-Swedish exercises Cross Border Training, which will last until May 20.

It was noted that 8 American fighters from Oregon arrived last Friday at the airbase Rissala. The planes of the US Air Force performed flights in Finnish airspace earlier, but this time they will be departing from Finnish airports, which has never happened before.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on National Defence of Finland Ilkka Kanerva said that the exercises are performed in accordance with partnership agreement with NATO. The decision was made by a government commission on foreign policy and security policy under the guidance of the President of Finland Sauli Niinistö.

According to the Chairman of the Commission, exercises witness that Americans are interested in the activities in Europe.

“This was caused by increased activity of Russia,” said Kanerva.
