Bulgaria strengthens defense: buys 16 fighter jets and 2 ships

The deputies of the National Assembly (Parliament) of Bulgaria approved the country’s Council of Ministers resolution on the acquisition of 16 multi-role fighters and 2 patrol ships to strengthen the defense capability of the National Army.

The document stresses that because of the limited financial capacity of Bulgaria, the acquisition of combat fighters will occur in two phases: 8-9 machines will be purchased from 2018 to 2020 (preliminary cost is about $9 billion), and the remaining fighters will be purchased before 2023.

The procedure for purchasing of 2 multipurpose patrol ships to the Naval Forces of Bulgaria is also planned for a few years, and will be completed by 2022.

Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry negotiates with several countries regarding the future supplies of aircraft and ships. The parliament instructed the department to complete the procedure of signing the relevant contracts by the end of 2016.

The exact value of the contracts will be known after Bulgaria determines the country where the equipment will be purchased.

Currently, military aviation of Bulgarian National Army consists of 19 Russian MiG-29 fighters, 15 of which have already went through the appropriate repairs.
