The organizers of the exhibition “Michelangelo. Creation of the World” decided to “dress up” the statue of David near the church of St. Anne after a complaint from a local resident.
Residents of St. Petersburg are asked to send in their ideas for the costume.
As reported at the website of children’s ombudsman, the woman who complained about the statue said that it “spoils the historical view of the city, and corrupts children’s souls.”
“How is it possible that this guy wearing no pants was put in the center of the city, near a school, and a church?” she said.
Valid points about Atlantis on Millionnaya street, the Summer Garden, and Peterhof, which also has nude statues, did not convince her.
At the same time, in the Lyceum number 239, which is located next to the statue, the reaction was calm. According to the director of the Lyceum Maxim Pratusevich, there was no complaints from parents, or teachers.
To resolve the issue, the exhibition organizers decided to start an event “Dress up David.” Suggestions should be sent by mail until August 15. Clothes for David will be chosen by open vote. The winner will get a ticket to the exhibition.
