Ministry of Education proposed to lay off more than 10,000 scientists by 2019

10,300 scientists may be laid off by 2019 due to lack of funds for the state program “Development of Science and Technology”.

This follows from the documents, prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science for the budget meeting at the Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Spending on state research programs will be reduced from 0.98% in 2015 to 0.87% in 2019. Because of this, it was proposed to dismiss up to 500 people from high schools in 2017.

The majority of cuts is planned for the Academy of Sciences, and the Kurchatov Institute. According to documents, the Ministry plans to exclude 8,300 scientists from the payroll of the Federal Agency of Scientific Organizations  by 2019 (3,500 of them may be laid off in 2017). Also, 1,500 researchers will leave the Kurchatov Institute next year.

The Ministry also noted that due to lack of funds, the number of budget places in high schools can be reduced by 40% in 2017.
