Putin announced unexpected check of combat readiness of Russian army


President Vladimir Putin announced an unexpected check of combat readiness of the Russian armed forces. From August 25 to 31, the Russian troops will be put on combat alert, said the Defense Minister.

“Today, a regular check was initiated in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The troops of the Southern Military district, part of the forces and means of the Western and Central military districts, the Northern Fleet, the High Command of Air Space Forces, command of the Airborne Troops – all are put on combat alert starting from 7:00 MSK,” said the Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu at a meeting with the leadership of the military.

Shoigu described the purpose of the check as practicing in “a full cycle of preparations for immediate readiness of the armed forces to defend the interests of the Russian Federation with an increase in threats to its security.”

Another goal of the check is to evaluate the Army’s ability to quickly increase the combat readiness in the south-western direction, said Shoigu.

“To assess the readiness of the Southern Military District to deploy self-contained group of forces for localizing crisis situations. To check capabilities of the Western and Central military districts to build up efforts on the south-western strategic direction,” said the minister, quoted by Interfax.
