Putin: Only Normandy format will help Donbas

As reported by RIA Novosti, Russian President Vladimir Putin says the Normandy format is the only option to resolve the conflict in the Donbas region.

“As for the Normandy format, well, good or bad, but there is no other option to make at least an attempt to settle. This is why Russia, of course, will support this format,” said Putin at a press conference on the results of the G20 summit.

At the G20 summit, Putin discussed the situation in Ukraine with U.S. President Barack Obama. Obama later said that for sanctions to be lifted, Russia must comply with the Minsk agreement. Putin also discussed the situation in Ukraine with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

It should be noted that French President Francois Hollande previously announced to hold new talks in the Normandy format in the coming weeks.

However, a spokesman for the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, said that Moscow has not confirmed its participation yet.

After the statements on the alleged sabotage of Ukrainians in the Crimea, Putin said that there is no more sense in meetings of “the Norman Quartet” because “Ukraine turned to terror.”
