USA and EU announced ultimatum to Russia on Syria

Russia was demanded to put an end to hostilities and to ensure access of humanitarian missions.

Foreign ministers of the United States, the Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, and the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini announced an ultimatum to Russia, demanding to put an end to hostilities in Syria, ensure access of humanitarian aid, and resume negotiations under the auspices of the UN. The corresponding statement was published at the US State Department website.

“The devastating events in Syria this week underscore what we have been saying for some time: the burden is on Russia to prove it is willing and able to take extraordinary steps to salvage diplomatic efforts to restore a cessation of hostilities (CoH), allow unfettered humanitarian assistance and create the conditions necessary for the resumption of UN-led talks about a political transition,” said in a statement.

Also in the statement expressed the outrage by the attack on the humanitarian convoy in Aleppo, using chemical weapons by government forces, and Russia’s support to the troops of Bashar Assad, which “blatantly contradicts Russia’s claim that it supports a diplomatic resolution”.

The US and the EU also called on Russia to take measures to stop bombing the Syrian opposition, and to focus on the elimination of the Islamic State.
