Pentagon in response to S-300 in Syria: American military pilots have right to self-defense

American military pilots performing combat missions in Syria have the inherent right to self-defense.

As reported by the “Voice of America”, a corresponding statement was made by the Assistant US Secretary of Defense Peter Cook at a briefing at the Pentagon on Tuesday, October 4 in response to a reporter’s question about the threat of Russian anti-aircraft missile systems S-300, capable of shooting down aircraft and cruise missiles.

He noted that none of the officially recognized Russian opponents in Syria have aviation.

“Two forces, against which Russia is formally at war: al-Nusra and the Islamic State do not have their own air force,” Cook said.
