NASA has to renew the contract with Roscosmos for the delivery of astronauts to the ISS.

NASA has no plans to renew the contract with Roscosmos for the delivery of astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) after 2018. This was announced by deputy head of the U.S. space agency’s manned programs, William Gerstenmaier.

“No, we do not plan to,” he said, answering a reporter’s question about a contract extension at Baikonur spaceport.

Gerstenmaier also noted that American manned spacecraft, which NASA plans to use for delivery of its astronauts to the International Space Station, will be ready as scheduled.

In the United States there are three companies (Lockheed, SpaceX, and Boeing) that are engaged in the development of manned spacecraft. It is expected that the first manned mission on Americans’ own ship will start in 2017.

As it was reported earlier, Roscosmos reduces the size of its crew to the International Space Station.
