Putin acknowledged Russia’s involvement in conflict in Donbas

According to the Russian president, Russia had to protect Russian-speaking population in Donbas.

In his speech at investment forum “Russia Calling”, president Vladimir Putin said that Russia was “forced to defend Russian-speaking population in the Donbas.”

Putin compared the situation in the eastern Ukraine with the Crimea: “We had to, I want to emphasize it: had to defend Russian-speaking population in the Donbas.”

He said that the same way Russia “had to respond to the willingness of the people living in the Crimea to return to the Russian Federation.”

On October 12, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted two resolutions on the situation in the east of Ukraine. The first one (prepared by the Czech deputy Christine Zelenkova) changed its name from “Political consequences of the crisis in Ukraine” to “Political consequences of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine” in the process of discussion.

The second resolution was about the situation with human rights violations in the territories of DPR and LPR (self-proclaimed republics in DonbasRRT), and contains a line that they were “created, maintained, and effectively controlled by the Russian Federation.”

Russian delegation has suspended its work in the PACE after the deprivation of the right to vote in 2015.
