NATO launched an operation named “Sea Guardian” to strengthen naval presence in the Mediterranean Sea. This is stated in the message on the alliance’s website.
“Today, NATO begins a new standing maritime security operation in the Mediterranean Sea named Operation Sea Guardian,” said in the message.
It was noted that the operation will bring together frigates from Bulgaria, Italy and Turkey, as well as Greek and Spanish subs. Besides that, it will involve maritime patrol aircraft from Greece, Turkey, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.
As follows from the message, “operation Sea Guardian will help maintain an accurate picture of daily activity in the Mediterranean to help identify possible security concerns.”.
The decision to start a new NATO maritime mission was made at the summit in Warsaw in July this year. According to the alliance, it will become an alternative to the Operation Active Endeavour, launched in 2001.
