As reported by Reuters on Thursday, December 29, the United States decided to expel 35 Russian diplomats and close access to two objects, used by Russian employees in New York and Maryland.
A senior U.S. official called it “a response to a campaign of harassment of American diplomats in Moscow by the Russian authorities.”
An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the news agency that Russian diplomats have 72 hours to leave the United States.
The access to two offices will be closed for all Russian officials starting at noon Friday. The unspecified facilities are said to have been used for intelligence gathering.
Also, on Thursday, U.S. President Barack Obama imposed sanctions against Russia in connection with the alleged cyber attacks against the electoral system. The FSB and the GRU of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces are among the organizations that have come under the sanctions. The sanctions list also includes 6 individuals.
