Supplies of electronic devices to Russia are at risk because of sanctions against FSB

The sanctions imposed by the U.S. against the Russian FSB could lead to impossibility of importing electronic devices into Russia.

Import of any electronic device with encryption (including tablets and mobile phones) is subject to mandatory consultation with the FSB. However, the newly imposed sanctions do not allow U.S. suppliers to communicate with the Russian authorities.

The sanctions affect “almost the entire industry,” and currently are being discussed by market participants in order to find a possible solution to the issue.

According to experts, the U.S. Treasury may soon issue a license allowing American companies to interact with the FSB for obtaining such permits.

Sanctions against the FSB were introduced by the decree of Barack Obama at the end of December 2016. Restrictions were introduced as a response to alleged Russian interference in the presidential elections in the United States with the help of large cyber attacks.
