Macron threatened Putin with tightening of sanctions if Donbass conflict escalates

French President Emmanuel Macron promised to tighten sanctions against the Russian Federation in the event of an escalation of the conflict in the Donbass.

He said this on May 29th at a press conference in Versailles after the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Regarding the Ukrainian crisis, I confirm that if it escalates then we can tighten sanctions against Russia. Although, I would prefer that de-escalation takes place, and we would not have to do that,” the French president stressed.

In turn, Putin said that anti-Russian sanctions would not help in resolving the conflict in Ukraine, and called for fighting against any restrictions in the world economy.

Earlier it was reported that after the meeting with Vladimir Putin Emmanuel Macron spoke in favor of activating the work in the Normandy format.
