Taken prisoner near Luhansk, Viktor Ageyev gave an interview to the Ukrainian news program TSN. In his interview he said that he was in the military unit for only 4 days, then signed a contract, and was transferred to the Donbas.
Russian citizen Viktor Ageyev, captured by Ukrainians in the Luhansk region in the Donbas, claims that he is a Russian serviceman who “signed a contract for service in the Russian Armed Forces.”
When asked about the military unit he served in, Ageyev replied: “65246, if I remember correctly”. As noted by the reporters, this unit is located in the Russian town of Novocherkassk of the Rostov region. According to agency Interfax, this is a communications regiment and the training center of the Air Forces of the Russian Federation.
Almost immediately transferred to the Donbas
According to Ageyev, he came to the unit, stayed there for 4 days, signed a contract for the service, and then almost immediately was sent to the Donbas.
Ageyev did not rule out that other Russian servicemen were sent from his unit to the east of Ukraine.
“Maybe they were, but not with my ‘party’,” he said. “I was going together with Alex,” he added.
He meant the commander of the operative group, Aleksander Shcherba. It was previously reported that three more people were taken prisoner with Ageyev, and two were killed during the clash.
Details of the capture
The first time reports of the detention of a 22-year-old Russian military contractor appeared on June 27th with reference to the press service of Ukraine’s Anti-Terrorist Operation headquarters, and the message of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The man was taken prisoner after a clash of one of the brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with a reconnaissance group of the self-proclaimed ‘Luhansk People’s Republic’.
The Defense Ministry of Russia, in turn, claimed that Viktor Ageyev “was on military service, and resigned in May 2016”.
