Russian athlete Nikolai Ivanov deadly stabbed in Moscow


As reported by TASS agency citing a source in the police, 23-year-old athlete Nikolai Ivanov, who was specializing in race walking, died of a stab wound in Moscow.

According to his personal trainer Tatyana Frolova, Ivanov attempted to stand up for girls, who were pestered by a drunk man.

The incident occurred on the night of September 15th. Ivanov was hospitalized, but died in the hospital an hour later.

A criminal case was opened under Part 4 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Deliberate infliction of grievous bodily harm, which by negligence caused the death of the victim”. On September 19th the suspect was detained.

A source in law enforcement agencies said that the suspect is a male born in 1992 who came to Moscow from Chechnya.

This is not the first death of an athlete in a street fight. Powerlifting champion Andrey Drachev died on August 20th as a result of a brain injury that he received during a fight with Anar Allahveranov. The Investigative Committee investigates the case as a murder committed from hooligan motives.

On September 19th it became known that the accused in the murder of Drachev surrendered to the FSB.
