Russian Ministry of Finance wants to criminalize importing of embargoed food


The Ministry of Finance of Russia has prepared a bill that introduced criminal liability for the import of banned food products. A corresponding document published on the portal for legal acts.

The Ministry proposes to amend the Criminal Code, supplementing article 226.1 with smuggling of embargoed food products. At the moment, the article provides liability for the smuggling of poisonous, explosive, radioactive substances, weapons and strategically important goods.

“The need to increase the responsibility of unscrupulous persons for failure to comply with relevant prohibitions and restrictions is particularly important now,” the explanatory note says.

Earlier, Rospotrebnadzor (Russia’s retail controlling service – RRT) suggested imposing fines for storage and transportation of embargoed goods.
