Russian senator Kerimov detained in Nice


As reported by TASS on Tuesday, November 21st, citing the Russian embassy in France, Russian senator Suleiman Kerimov was detained in Nice.

According to diplomats, Kerimov, who is a member of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, was detained in the evening of November 20th at the airport of Nice. He was taken to the police station, where he has been since.

It was noted that Russian Embassy workers arrived to the police station to provide him with consular support. As reported by Reuters referring to the French prosecutor’s office, the senator was detained for tax evasion.

In the upper chamber of the Russian parliament, Suleiman Kerimov represents Dagestan. For a long time he was engaged in business. Forbes estimated his fortune at $6.3 billion.

In March, there were reports of searches at Villa Hier (Cote d’Azur, France), which according to newspaper Nice-Matin belongs to Kerimov.
