The number of unemployed increased by 8% in October


According to Rosstat (Russia’s statistics agency – RRT), in October 2015 the number of unemployed in Russia increased by 8% compared with the same period last year.

“In comparison with October 2014 the number of employed population (excluding the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol) decreased by 500 thousand, or 0.7%, while the number of unemployed increased by 310 thousand, or 8.0%,” – said in the study.

By the end of October, in public employment services there were 911 thousand people registered as unemployed, which is 0.8% less than in September 2015, and by 13.7% more compared with October 2014.

According to Rosstat, the number of economically active population aged 15-72 years (that includes both employed and unemployed persons) in October 2015 was 76.8 million people (53% of the total population). Of these, 72.5 million are classified as engaged in economic activities, and 4.3 million – as unemployed, matching the criteria of the International Labour Organization (did not have a job, or gainful occupation, looking for a job, and were ready to begin work in the survey week).
