Ukraine refused to buy Russian gas

Ukraine will not buy Russian gas at the price set on January 1, 2016 by the Government of the Russian Federation. This was said by the Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseny Yatsenyuk in a video message to the citizens.

According to him, Ukraine has accumulated a “sufficient amount” of gas. Total there is about 13 billion cubic meters of gas in Ukrainian storage facilities, said Yatsenyuk.

“We do not buy gas from Russia, because we buy gas in the European Union for less than Russia offers. The average cost of purchasing gas in the European Union is about $200,” – said Yatsenyuk on Sunday on TV during the “10 minutes with Prime Minister” show.

  • December 30, the Russian government approved the export duty for gas for the first quarter of 2016. According to the decree, Ukraine will buy Russian gas at a discount price of $212.23 per thousand cubic meters of gas with the contract price of $230, reported RIA Novosti on January 1st.
  • Ukraine did not buy Russian gas in July, August and September 2015. Instead, Kiev was buying gas from the European Union. For the period from October 12 to November 25 Ukraine resumed purchasing gas from Russia.
