Norwegian police wants to close the border with Russia

The head of Norwegian police of the Finnmark province that borders Russia Catherine Helen Haetta appealed to the government to grant them the right to close the border with the Russian Federation in case of need.

According to the NRK, the police chief said that such measures might be appropriate in case of an increased inflow of refugees from Russia.

“Since we all remember the events of the fall very well, we should explore the possibility of a physical border closure for a certain period for safety reasons, and such a power should be granted to the head of regional police,” – she wrote in a letter to the government.

She also noted that a decision whether a migrant arriving from Russia matches a relevant criteria should be made before they cross the border with Norway. Police officers should be entitled to make such decisions on the spot, while the refugee is still on the territory of the Russian Federation.
