Lithuania closes consulate in Kaliningrad region of Russia

Residents of Kaliningrad, which is the most remote, and the most separate region of Russia, felt all the negativity of the Kremlin’s actions in eastern Ukraine. Being located within Europe, they counted on easy entry into the EU, but Lithuania has refused this idea after considering Moscow’s policy in Ukraine.

So, in Vilnius it was decided to close the consulate in the border city of Sovetsk, which operated there since 2003. Also, it was refused to negotiate on small border traffic with the Kaliningrad region.

Lithuania was ready for this project before the elections, but the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite, who is one of the most loyal partners of Kiev, accuses Moscow of financing of terrorism in the Donbas, so the Lithuanians refused to build a road in the Sovietsk area.

However, so far Kaliningrad is hoping that Vilnius will change their mind, pointing out that the simplified visa regime exists with Poland, but Warsaw may also change their mind. They are also unhappy with Moscow’s policies.
