Putin promised to take measures if Finland joins NATO

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that in the case of Finland’s accession to NATO Russian troops that were previously withdrawn from the border with Finland will not remain at their positions.

He said this at a press conference with President of Finland Sauli Niinistö.

“Imagine that Finland joins NATO, which means that Finnish troops are not independent anymore, they become part of NATO’s military infrastructure, which suddenly is on the borders of the Russian Federation”, Putin said.

“Do you think we’ll keep acting like we were? Do you think our troops will remain at 1,500 kilometres from the Finnish border where were previously withdrawn to?” he continued.

At the same time, Putin said that Russia “in any case will respect any choice of the Finnish people.” He noted that it is the Finns who should ensure the country’s independence and security.

At the same time, Putin emphasized that Russia appreciates Finland‘s neutral status, and treats it with respect.
