Russia calls for emergency UN Security Council meeting after American strikes on Syrian army


Russia calls for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council regarding air strikes, performed by the coalition led by the United States on the positions of the Syrian army.

This was said by spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

“Permanent representative of Russia was instructed to call for an urgent meeting of the Security Council at the United Nations on this issue,” said Zakharova to the TV channel “Russia 24”.

“We demand an explanation from Washington, complete and detailed explanation. It should be given in the UN Security Council,” she added.

Security Council meeting was scheduled for 7:30 pm (EST), and will be held behind closed doors.

Earlier it was reported that Air Force of anti-Assad coalition, led by the United States, attacked the positions of Syrian army in the province of Deir ez-Zor. Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said that Syrian troops, surrounded by militants of the terrorist group Islamic State, were attacked 4 times from the air near the air field of ​​Deir ez-Zor. 62 soldiers were killed, about 100 injured.
