U.S. Senate Committee approved protocol on accession of Montenegro to NATO

On December 6, U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations approved the protocol on the accession of Montenegro to NATO.

The document will be put to the Senate vote, and then, if approved, will be available for presidential signing.

Thus, the United States will become the 15th member of NATO to ratify the entry of a new, 29th ally in the Alliance.

The accession of Montenegro to NATO is strongly opposed by Russia, saying that the Alliance continues its inconsiderate eastward expansion. In October, Montenegro accused Moscow of involvement in a coup attempt. As it was stated in Podrogica, on the day of parliamentary elections, the country’s security services arrested several armed groups, managed from Russia.
