Russia might prohibit using natural gas in residential buildings

According to Russia Today, the head of Rostekhnadzor Alexei Alyoshin sent a letter to member of State Duma Valery Rashkin with a suggestion to prohibit using of natural gas in residential buildings.

“In order to avoid explosions and fires that result in loss of life and destruction of residential buildings, there is a proposal to take an ultimate decision to ban the use of gas in apartment buildings, including those under construction, and the ones that are already occupied,” said in the message.

It is not specified when this decision is going to be implemented in Russia. Also, it was not reported whether the matter was discussed with heads of other departments and relevant organizations.

According to statistics, nearly 67% of all residential areas are supplied with natural gas. Nevertheless, the domestic gas consumption that is used for heating water and cooking does not exceed 1% of the total amount of fuel consumed.
