USA attacked Syrian military base with Tomahawk missiles

As reported by NBC News, the United States fired cruise missiles at the base of the government troops in Syria.

59 Tomahawk missiles were launched from American ships in the Mediterranean. The attack targeted the base near Homs, which, according to the United States, was used during the recent attack with chemical weapons. At the same time, Homs Governor Talal Barazi said that the Syrian army used this base to fight the ISIS.

As CNN notes, the attack took place between 8 pm and 9 pm EST. According to Reuters, the Syrian state television called the missile attack of the US armed forces on the government base an act of aggression.

The Pentagon stressed that the strike was an unilateral action of the United States in response to a chemical attack. The U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters that Washington did not contact Moscow before and after the attack. However, the U.S. military department previously reported that they contacted the Russian military over the established communication line in order to notify the Russian side in advance. Trump’s national security adviser Herbert McMaster clarified that the U.S. was trying to minimize the risks for the Russian military.

The Russian Foreign Ministry intends to make a statement in the near future. Moscow may demand an urgent UN Security Council meeting.
