Tillerson: Russia’s interference in elections is well documented. No ‘clean state’ is possible.

On May 14th the head of the U.S. Department of State Rex Tillerson said that Russia’s intervention in the presidential elections in 2016 is confirmed with documents.

According to him, it is impossible to build new relations with Russia without taking this fact into account.

“I think it’s been well documented, it’s pretty well understood, the nature of that interference, here and elsewhere,” Tillerson said on NBC. “We have a broad range of important issues that have to be addressed in the U.S.-Russia relationship. Obviously the interference in the election is one of those.”

Tillerson was asked why the matter of Russia’s interference in the elections was not raised at his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on May 10th in Washington, as well as on Lavrov’s meeting with the U.S. President Donald Trump.

“I think it’s important to understand we’re not trying to start with a clean slate. I think terms like having ‘a reset’ are overused. You cannot reset. You cannot erase the past. You cannot start with a clean slate… We’re starting with the slate we have,” Tillerson replied.

The Russian authorities have repeatedly denied interference in the presidential elections in the United States. A few days ago U.S. President Donald Trump fired the head of the FBI, whose agency, in particular, investigated Russia’s interference in the elections.
