FIFA Vice President Angel Maria Villar arrested on corruption charges


On July 18th, Spanish police arrested the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Angel Maria Villar, who was also the FIFA Vice President, on suspicion of corruption, forgery of documents, and embezzlement.

The RFEF office in Madrid was raided by the police, several people were detained. Among them is the son of Villar, Gorka.

Angel Maria Villar has been heading the RFEF since 1988, and was also the current Vice President of FIFA and UEFA. In November 2015, the FIFA Ethics Committee issued him a warning, and imposed a fine of 25,000 Swiss francs for refusing to cooperate with the investigation into the choice of Russia and Qatar as host countries for the 2018 and 2022 World Championships.
