Trump wants to initiate reform of United Nations

As reported by Reuters, president of the United States Donald Trump will try to gather world leaders at the UN headquarters in New York on September 18th to discuss the reform of the organization.

It was noted that the countries will be invited if they sign the draft of the political declaration prepared by the U.S., consisting of 10 points, supporting the efforts of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

The draft political declaration states: “We support the secretary-general in making concrete changes in the United Nations system to better align its work on humanitarian response, development and sustaining peace initiatives.”

It was proposed to consider the optimization of UN bodies in order “to avoid possible abuse and reduce costs.”

Trump advocates reducing U.S. spending on the UN, calling the organization a “club for people to get together, talk and have a good time.”

Reuters notes that the United States is the biggest UN contributor, providing 22% of its $5.4 billion biennial core budget and 28.5% of its $7.3 billion peacekeeping budget.
