Russian national team banned from 2018 Winter Olympics

As it was said by the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach at the press conference, the Executive Committee of the IOC suspended the Russian national team from participating in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Athletes who have proved that they did not use doping can compete under a neutral flag. The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) was disqualified by the decision of the Executive Committee. Also, all officials from the Russian Ministry of Sports were denied accreditation to the Games in Pyeongchang.

The meeting of the Executive Committee took place in Lausanne (Switzerland). The decision was made based on the conclusions reached by the two commissions: Denis Oswald’s and Samuel Schmidt’s. The first was engaged in a re-examination of doping samples of participants of the Olympic Games in Sochi, the second was investigating the involvement of employees of the Russian Ministry of Sport in the possible concealment of positive doping tests.

In November, 10 medals that were won by Russian athletes in Sochi in 2014 were taken away. Thus, the team has lost its first place in the team medal count.

The Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang will be held next year from February 9th to February 25th.
