School in Kemerovo region closed due to high radiation level

Several class rooms were closed in a local school in the Kemerovo region because of the excess of radioactive gases radon and thoron.

During an inspection of the school in the city of Osinniki, specialists of Rospotrebnadzor (Russia’s retail controlling service – RRT) detected a significant amount of radioactive elements. The results of the inspection were sent to the court, which agreed with the fact of violation of sanitary and epidemiological requirements. After this, 3 dangerous class rooms were closed for 90 days.

On November 10th, experts from the French Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety had come to the conclusion that a radioactive cloud arose in Russia between the Volga River and the Ural Mountains. Later, the chief oncologist of the Chelyabinsk region, Andrei Vazhenin, advised residents of the region, where extremely high environmental contamination with radioactive isotope ruthenium Ru-106 was recorded, to “watch football and drink beer”.
