Messenger WeChat was banned in Russia

Roskomnadzor (Russian controlling service over telecommunications – RRT) added WeChat messaging service into the register of prohibited websites based on the Federal Law “On Information, Information Technologies, and Information Protection”.

Earlier, based on the same law Roskomnadzor banned BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), Line, Imo and VChat.

The law that introduced the concept of “an organizer of the distribution of information on the Internet” entered into force on August 1st, 2014. “Information distributors” are entrusted with special duties, for the failure of which their resources can be blocked on the territory of the Russian Federation.

In particular, they need to store on the territory of the Russian Federation “the facts of receiving, transmitting, delivering messages and content, as well as information about users, and also provide it to authorized state bodies conducting search or investigating activities, or ensuring the security of the Russian Federation.”
