Roskomnadzor has officially added BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), Imo, Line and VChat into the register of banned services because they refused to register as “information distributors”.
The representative of Roskomnadzor (Russian controlling service over telecommunications – RRT) Vadim Ampelonsky confirmed the blocking of the messengers.
“We systematically fill the register of information distributors. Those who do not react, they get blocked in full compliance with the law”, said Ampelonsky.
He did not specify what other messengers were contacted regarding the same issue. “You will learn everything as decisions are made regarding specific services,” he said.
According to Russian legislation, “information distributors” are individuals and organizations that own websites allowing sending electronic messages. A corresponding registry of Roskomnadzor already contains such popular Internet services as mail.yandex.ru, liveinternet.ru, habrahabr.ru, and others.
